Our Story: Three Stars, Three Sisters, One Kitchen
In 1958, Nonna Peppina opened a small trattoria on Via Roma in Monti, a quiet village in the Gallura region of northeastern Sardinia, just twenty minutes from Olbia. She called it Trattoria Pensione Tre Stelle — three stars, one for each of her three daughters: Felicina, Pierina, and Teresa. Travelers, merchants, and workers would stop in Monti and sit at Peppina's tables, where she served the food she knew best: hearty vegetable soups and slow-cooked meat stews, all made from recipes passed down through generations. In May 1984, her daughter Maria Teresa Chessa took over the kitchen and renamed the restaurant Trattoria Locanda Stella. The name changed, but the soul never did. Today, nearly seventy years later, *Stella is highly rated 4.7 stars on TripAdvisor and is the #1 restaurant in Monti. But it's still Teresa and Valerio's table — and every guest is treated like family.

Traditional Gallurese Cuisine, Made by Hand
Teresa learned to cook the way her mother Peppina taught her — by watching, tasting, and standing beside her in the kitchen until the recipes became her own. Today, she still cooks every dish from scratch using those same Gallurese traditions. The pasta — gnocchi, bucatini, ravioli — is rolled fresh each morning. The meats, cheeses, and vegetables come from small farms in the territory of Monti, producers who still follow the rhythms of nature and the old ways. In spring, wild herbs are gathered from the surrounding hillsides. The wines are local too: Vermentino di Gallura for white, Cannonau for red. Nothing is imported, nothing is industrial, nothing is rushed. This is real zero-kilometer cooking — honest Sardinian food made the way Nonna Peppina would have wanted it.
A Place Worth the Detour
The dining room is small — just a handful of tables, a crackling fireplace, and the sound of jazz in the background. Teresa's son Valerio welcomes you at the door. He knows every dish, every wine, and every story behind them, and he'll make sure your glass is never empty. A full dinner — antipasto, primo, secondo, dolce — still costs under €35 per person. Portions are generous, the wine is local, and you'll leave with a complimentary mirto or limoncello. Whether you're driving from Olbia, the Costa Smeralda, or the ferry port, Trattoria Locanda Stella is the kind of place people come back to year after year. Not because it's trendy—because it's genuine, because it's real.
